gastrointestinalGI Disorders

Gastrointestinal disorders include all medical conditions involved in the digestion and absorption of foods. Digestion starts in the mouth and ends with the bowel and there is much happening in between.

GI disorders can also be the cause of other chronic conditions, such as malnutrition and malabsorption, and subsequently lead to immune suppression and infections, like pneumonia. It is important to identify and treat GI disorders immediately.

Typical GI disorders are:

  • Esophagitis or esophagial stricture
  • GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease)
  • Heartburn, Hiatal Hernia
  • Gastritis or Gastroenteritis
  • Ulcers
  • Gastrectomy
  • Chronic Diarrhea/Constipation
  • Fat Malabsorption Syndrome
  • Celiac Disease (also referred to as gluten enteropathy or sprue)
  • Lactase Deficiency
  • Colitis or Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Diverticular Disease
  • Crohn’s Disease

With many of these disorders, the amount and type of fiber in the diet in important and needs modification. With others, it can be the elimination or moderation of certain foods that provides relief and management. Your physician may prescribe medications to assist the management.
