GI Edge
Target Audience: People with Diabetes and Sports Enthusiasts.
A 90-Minute Workshop on Glycemic Load and its Impact on:
- Diabetes Management
- Athletic Performance
- Weight Management
What is the "glycemic load'?
The glycemic load is simply the impact that a measured amount of carbohydrate
has on the production of blood glucose. Blood glucose levels affect insulin production
as well as a host of other hormones and metabolic functions. Consequently, controlling
one's glucose levels impacts how the body will function in its utilization or
conservation of energy. And so it can have a profound impact in many ways on:
Diabetes
Glycemic Index (GI) and subsequent Glycemic Load (GL) have long been a controversial
issue in the management of diabetes. Since 1993, the emphasis has been on carbohydrate
counting. Confusing as some have found this, the concept has provided persons
with diabetes a lot more flexibility in dietary choice. However, simple starch-based
foods and sugars still seem to create problems in management. Learning how to
use the glycemic load of foods and mixtures of foods can go a long way to enhancing
blood sugar control and managing the complications of diabetes.
Athletic Performance
Endurance athletes can benefit from utilizing glycemic loading to ensure peak
delivery of glucose to the muscles. Because carbohydrates all break down to glucose
at different rates, adjusting the type of carbohydrate at certain times will optimize
body performance. Runners, cyclists, swimmers, dancers and those who play strenuous
games like soccer, basketball, and football (depending on the position they play)
can all benefit.
Weight Management
Many factors affect a person's weight. We know that sedentary lifestyle and
poor diet contribute significantly. Dieting has become an overall negative influence
on weight management. Using glycemic loading to moderate the absorption of carbohydrates
can decrease insulin production, provide more consistent energy production and
help control how fat is utilized in the body. It also can enhance appetite control
on much fewer calories. Ultimately, it is calories IN vs calories OUT that supports
weight management efforts. Teaching your body how to utilize calories effectively
is the key. Raising the metabolism involves using the muscles - and muscles need
carbohydrates. It's using the GL to come up with the right fuel mix that will
optimize your efforts!
